What Is a Mesh Wi-Fi System?

A mesh WiFi system is a game changer when it comes to improving the WiFi coverage in your home.

If you’re not familiar with mesh systems, they are a group of wireless access points that talk to each other and connect back to your main internet router.

This concept is useful for larger homes or spaces where a single traditional router can not provide uniform coverage.

Mesh networks or systems a very easy to install.

You can set up most of these systems wirelessly.

This means you do not have to worry about running Ethernet cables or making complicated wiring connections.

One thing to keep in mind is that not all mesh Wi-Fi systems are created equal.

Some have more features, such as parental controls or built-in antivirus protection, than others.

The reason why we are reviewing the best mesh WiFi system for Starlink.

The Requirement to Use A Mesh System With Starlink

To use any mesh system with your Starlink, there is one main requirement that you’ll need to meet.

You’ll need to purchase Starlink’s ethernet adapter.

The ethernet adapter provides you with an Ethernet port to connect your mesh system.

Design Features

The TP-Link Deco X90 has a visually appealing design. The device can blend in with any home decor you might have in place.

The two Deco devices that arrive with your purchase are identical.

You can choose which one to connect to your modem as your main Deco.

Setting up the device was a breeze. It took me approximately fifteen minutes to set everything up and get it running.

Speeds, bands, and coverage area

Compared to other mesh wireless devices within the same price range, the X90’s wifi range is unparallel.

With an impressive WiFi 6 speed of up to 6,600 Mbps, the X90 can handle the data needs on all your connected devices.

When I tested its speed at the farthest corner of my home, my connection was seamless with no network signal drops or lags.

Ports & Connectivity

One feature that could have made the difference on the Deco X90 is a USB port to connect printers or other hard drives.

However, the device has two Gigabit Ethernet ports (1 GB and 2.5 GB Ethernet ports) and supports wired ethernet backhaul for better speeds.

If you plan to use more hardwired connections, you can easily attach an unmanaged switch to this device.

Compatibility with other devices and services

Pairing my Deco X90 with Alexa was easy. It was very convenient to use simple Alexa voice commands.

The device also works seamlessly with my Starlink internet service.

It’s a perfect shot if you are particularly interested in extending the reach of your internet in your home.

Security features

TP-link provides a range of security features to keep your home network safe.

Some of these features are free to use and include a Network Security Scan, basic parental controls, a Quality of Service feature, and weekly/monthly reports.

To benefit from advanced security features, you have to subscribe to TP-Link’s HomeShield Pro paid service.

This extra charge is disappointing, especially given the high cost of the device.

User Experience

Similar to the Eero 6 Plus, the only interface to configure and use this router is through its app.

It has common features like port forwarding and setting up a guest network.

One feature that I found lacking was its Quality of Service (QoS) feature. All you can do with this feature is set devices to be “high priority”. You do not have the flexibility of ordering devices by priority.

Also, you can’t assign certain traffic to be a high priority. If this is a concern to you, you can check the Asus Tri-band router instead. It is very customizable.

Finally, if you own a garage door opener like me, you know the importance of ensuring that the hub connects to the 2.4 GHz band. I couldn’t set up an independent Wi-Fi network for devices that function only on the 2.4 GHz band. This was a huge drawback for me.

Design Features

The Netgear RBK852 is nothing similar to the other routers reviewed in this guide.

It is larger and more industrial looking.

The white color scheme makes the device neutral and unobtrusive.

This tri-band mesh WiFi device is easy to mount in any corner of the room. It has a decent size of 10 inches by 7.5 inches.

Speeds, bands, and coverage area

The speed of this device is impressive. This Orbi comes with WiFi 6 wireless standards and offers a maximum network speed of up to 6000 Gbps.

I routinely hit peaks of 850Mbps at the farthest corner of my house.

The Netgear Orbi RBK852 can cover up to 5,000 square feet and supports up to 100 devices. If you need more coverage in your home, you can add a satellite that covers another 2,500 square feet.

Hardware Performance

This mesh router comes with a Quad-core 2.2 GHz processor and a 1 GHz RAM which enables it to handle more connected devices. The hardware performance of the device is solid and reliable.

Ports & Connectivity

The Netgear Orbi RBK852 comes with 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports on the router and each accompanying satellite.

With more Ethernet ports, you can establish a wired connection with devices such as game consoles and streaming players. The advantage of this is your devices will maintain a stable and fast internet connection.

Compatibility with other devices and services

The Netgear Orbi RBK852 is compatible with Starlink and other ISP providing faster speeds up to 2.5 Gbps.

You can connect the device to Google Assistant if you need to and it works seamlessly with Amazon Alexa.

Security features

As far as securing your network is concerned, Netgear ships the Orbi RBK852 with its premium Netgear Armor.

Though a paid service, this feature automatically protects your family’s WiFi with a shield of security. If you want to test out the service, Netgear offers a 30-day free trial.

User Experience

While testing the Orbi, my experience with it was not all positive.

It took me longer than expected to set up the device. However, once I got it all set up, everything worked as expected.

While the device itself is an excellent WiFi powerhouse, the app and web interface tools need improvement. Most time navigating the app proved difficult. I honestly expect Netgear to do a better job at improving the software.

Amazon Eero 6+

Amazon Eero 6+
  • Supports wifi speeds up to a gigabit
  • Contains a smart home hub to connect compatible Thread and Zigbee devices on your network with Alexa
  • Support for 160 MHz client devices
  • Each Eero 6+ has two 1.0Gb Ethernet ports
We may earn a commission if you make a purchase, at no additional cost to you.

Design Features

The Eero 6 Plus looks modern and sleek. Its glossy white plastic finish gives the device a high-quality look, perfect for any home decor.

One standout design feature of the Eero 6 Plus is its solo indicator light. It is located on the front of the node and lets you know at a glance if the device is working correctly.

Speeds, bands, and coverage area

The Eero 6 Plus offers good coverage with up to 1500 square feet for each Eero device. This makes it a perfect wireless router unit for larger homes or offices.

According to Amazon Eero, the Eero 6 Plus can handle up to 75 connected devices.

However, it is worth noting that the connection speeds varied greatly between the Eeros.

For instance, I could only get 250 Mbps of connection speed on the second floor compared to 900 Mbps at the main hub.

Nonetheless, the Eero 6+ supports up to one-gigabit speed.

The Eero 6+ also provides enough bandwidth for the whole family to work or stream simultaneously. This is made possible with the introduction of an additional 160 MHz radio channel.

Hardware Performance

Compared with the AX1800 of the first generation Eero 6, the Eero 6 Plus boasts an upgraded AX3000 build.

The devices come with the latest WiFi 6 technology, WiFi 6.

The system is equipped with a 1 GHz dual-core processor, 512 MB RAM, and 4 GB storage.

These specs provide an excellent performance that is faster and more efficient.

Ports & Connectivity

On the back of the device are two gigabit Ethernet ports and a USB-C power port for power.

Similar to the Deco X90, this mesh router lacks a USB-B port for connecting storage devices.

If you are using a multi-gig internet plan, you’ll notice that these ethernet ports will limit your incoming connection,

This is simply because the Ethernet ports are not multi-gig ports.

Compatibility with other devices and services

The Eero 6 Plus is fully compatible with most ISP including Starlink. We have a detailed outlined guide to extending your Starlink connection with Eero.

Besides connecting the device to service providers, Eero is also compatible with Echo devices, You also have the possibility of extending your Eero home network using Echo devices as extenders.

Security features

Eero has heavily invested in the security of its devices. However, most of its security features are locked behind a paid subscription plan called Eero Plus.

You can learn more about the Eero Plus subscription here.

While Eero offers basic security features like WPA3 encryption, you’ll need a subscription to access additional layers of security.

If you need advanced security features like VPN, ad blocking, threat detection, parental control, etc, this is only possible with the Eero Plus subscription.

User Experience

Aside from its security features that are behind a paid wall, Eero 6 Plus is relatively easy to install with the Eero app.

It took me fifteen minutes to set up my whole Eero Wi-Fi network.

Eero needs more improvement when handling a device from one node to the other. I noticed my iPhone loses internet connection for a few seconds or so when I moved from one end of the house to another.

Google mesh Wifi system

Google mesh Wifi system
  • Covers up to 1500 square feet per point.
  • Easy to set up using the Google Home App.
  • Choose which devices get a faster internet connection.

Design Features

Although the Google Mesh WiFi may feel somewhat cheap compared to other mesh routers reviewed in this guide, it does have a decent design.

With a 106mm diameter and a height of 68mm, the device is functional and sleek enough to blend into most home environments.

Handling the device for the first time, it felt lightweight but this is also an advantage as it’s easy to move it around.

Speeds, bands, and coverage area

The Google Mesh WiFi provides excellent coverage in the home.

A single WiFi point can cover up to 1,500 square feet. If you own a larger home, a set of three can cover up to 4,500 square feet.

You also have the possibility of adding additional mesh nodes per your demand.

This mesh WiFi device uses WiFi 5 which is significantly slow given the recent advancements in Wi-Fi 6 technology.

However, if you need stable connectivity throughout your home, this router is the answer. The reason why I have included it in this round-up review.

Hardware Performance

On the hardware side, Google Mesh WiFi comes with a Quad-core ARM processor.

Other specs include 512 MB RAM and 4 GB flash memory.

Trying out this system for the first time, the system was reliable and responsive with no noticeable lags or delays in performance.

Ports & Connectivity

You’d easily notice two Ethernet ports on the device.

However, only one of them is dedicated to internet connection. The other port is for connecting external devices. For users who need more Gigabit Ethernet ports to hardwire their devices, this can be frustrating.

Compatibility with other devices and services

Looking at its compatibility with other Google Nest products, this mesh WiFi router is compatible with Google Nest WiFi router and Google Nest WiFi point.

But it is not compatible with the next-generation Google Nest WiFi Pro (Google’s tri-band mesh router).

The device is also compatible with most ISP including Starlink.

Security features

Following the same logic as its competitors, Google’s mesh WiFi comes with some notable security features.

However, these features can only work when you enable Google Cloud services.

One prominent security feature on Google Mesh WiFi is the “Family Wi-Fi”.

It enables you to enable website filtering of adult sites and also pause WAN connectivity. You can also pause the WiFi on kids’ devices using the Family feature.

Also, using the mobile app, you can see devices connected, monitor device data usage, and prioritize devices on the network.

User Experience

Compared to the Eero app, the Google Mesh WiFi app has great capabilities.

It gives you a detailed screenshot of real-time data usage per device.

You also have the possibility of viewing your data consumption on a weekly or monthly basis.

I find this information very useful. The Eero app is lacking in this aspect as it only gives you real-time activity, not user data.

Design Features

The Asus RT-AX92U is a compact router that features a small square box design with four antennas.

You can raise the antenna upwards for better coverage or collapse them on top of the router.

The router’s design is similar to the GT-AX11000 but much smaller. Its small size makes the router an excellent choice for those with small space to spare.

Speeds, bands, and coverage area

The RT-AX92U offers Wi-Fi 6 networking which delivers extremely stable and fast WiFi to every corner of the house.

Combining its Wi-Fi 6 speeds with wireless coverage ensures every connected device enjoys the best possible speed from your ISP.

The router uses OFDMA and MU-MIMO technology. These technologies enable more efficient, stable, and faster transmission even when multiple devices are transmitting data simultaneously.

The router is also backward compatible with Wi-Fi 4 and Wi-Fi 5 wireless connections to support a wide range of devices.

Hardware Performance

This Asus router measures 15.5 cm in width and 5.5 cm tall.

For its size, the device’s hardware performance is exceptional. This square box router is equipped with a 1.8 GHz dual-core processor and 512 MB of RAM. This also includes 256 MB of flash memory to help with processes.

Ports & Connectivity

Despite the small footprint, the RT-AX92U has the standard one Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports.

Unlike all other compatible mesh routers reviewed so far, this device has two USB ports to host external devices like NAS, printers, etc.

The only downside with connectivity is the lack of a multi-gig Ethernet port.

Compatibility with other devices and services

The RT-AX92U connects seamlessly with any compatible Asus AiMesh router.

With Asus AiMesh technology, you can connect multiple compatible Asus routers to create a whole-home mesh WiFi network.

Security features

This AiMesh AX6100 WiFi System comes ready with Asus AiProtection.

The parental controls in AiProtection integrate all the management functions you need in one place. This feature includes blocking internet access on specific devices during certain timeframes.

Also, you can restrict some categories of mobile apps and websites. The security feature also identifies and blocks known malicious sites automatically for you.

User Experience

Though the router looks small, it feels heavy for its size. The plastic covering on this device feels thick and durable.

I found the system easy to install. Also, managing it from the Asus router app was quick and easy. This router is highly customizable. It is a good pick for network nerds.

Verdict

If you’re looking to take your Starlink internet connection to the next level, using a mesh WiFi system is the way to go.

For those who prefer a plug and play system without the need for a delicate set up, I recommend the Eero 6 Plus. Its easy to set up and works well with your starlink internet connection.
